Britons Clearly Want a Televised Leaders Debate
Many adults in Britain would like to see the leaders of the three main parties—Labour, Conservatives and Liberal Democrats—participating in a televised debate before the next general election, according to a poll by Angus Reid Strategies. 76 per cent of respondents support the idea.

Steady Christian Democrats Lead in Germany
The formation of a centre-right administration is looking more likely in Germany, according to a poll by FG Wahlen released by ZDF. 37 per cent of respondents would vote for the Christian-Democratic Union (CDU) or the Bavarian Christian-Social Party (CSU) in this month’s federal election.

Sarkozy Gains, But Cannot Reach 50% in France
A gesture of support from the majority of the population remains elusive for French president Nicolas Sarkozy, according to a poll by Ifop published in Le Journal de Dimanche. 45 per cent of respondents are satisfied with the president’s performance, while 54 per cent express dissatisfaction.

Centre-Left Parties Fall Below 50% in Germany
The Christian-Democratic Union (CDU) and the Bavarian Christian-Social Party (CSU) are still the top contenders in Germany’s electoral race, according to a poll by Infratest-Dimap. 35 per cent of respondents would support either party in this month’s federal ballot, down one point since mid-August.

PASOK Enters Greek Race as Strongest Party
Greece’s upcoming general election could see the Pan-Hellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) securing a victory, according to a poll by MARC published in Ethnos. 33.7 per cent of respondents would vote for the main opposition party in next month’s legislative ballot, down 1.1 points since March.

Britain Divided on Image and Benefits of EU
A Euro barometer poll shows that only a minority of (18%) the British felt informed about the EU compared to 12 % and 15% of in 2002 and 2006 respectively. However 83% said they knew little or nothing about EU. Similarly a tiny minority of the British public “strongly” agree that the information available on EU affairs was simple and clear (4%) and a third (34%) agree to some extent. They had divided views of the image and benefits of EU.

VMRO-DPMNE Stands Uncontested in Macedonia

Macedonia’s governing alliance is gaining public support and has practically no political rival, according to a poll by the Institute for Democracy. 29.1 per cent of respondents would vote for the Macedonian Revolutionary Organization - Democratic Party for Macedonian National Unity (VMRO-DPMNE) in the next legislative election, up three points since July.

NORTH AMERICA
Americans Still Prefer Republicans for Combating Terrorism

Americans continue to give the Republican Party a slight edge over the Democratic Party -- 49% vs. 42% -- in their perceptions of the party that will better protect the United States from international terrorism and military threats. The Republicans' edge on this issue is unchanged from last year but has diminished from earlier in the decade.

Muslims Widely Seen As Facing Discrimination
Americans see Muslims as facing more discrimination inside the U.S. than other major religious groups. Nearly six-in-ten adults (58%) say that Muslims are subject to a lot of discrimination, far more than say the same about Jews, evangelical Christians, atheists or Mormons.

In U.S., Trust in State Government Sinks to New Low
Americans' trust in state government is down sharply this year, after showing remarkable stability over the prior four readings. Gallup's annual Governance Poll, conducted Aug. 31-Sept. 2, finds 51% of Americans saying they have "a great deal" or "a fair amount" of trust in their state government to handle state problems, down from 67% from 2004 to 2008.
Americans’ Trust in Legislative Branch at Record Low
A record-low 45% of Americans say they have a great deal or fair amount of trust in the legislative branch of government, far fewer than trust the judicial (76%) or executive (61%) branches. Second only to the judicial branch are Americans themselves -- 73% trust "the American people as a whole" to make judgments about the issues facing the country.

Economy, Healthcare Top "Most Important Problem" List
A new Gallup Poll finds 26% of Americans mentioning "healthcare" when asked to name the most important problem facing the United States today. That is slightly lower than the 29% who mention the economy in general terms. Fifteen percent name unemployment specifically, while between 8% and 10% mention dissatisfaction with government, the federal budget deficit, and the Iraq war.

Felipe Calderón maintains a good level of public backing in Mexico, according to a poll by Reforma. 68 per cent of respondents approve of their president’s performance, down one point since May.

A majority of people in Argentina have a negative opinion of their country’s president, according to a poll by Poliarquía Consultores. 53 per cent of respondents now view Cristina Fernández de Kirchner in a negative light, up 12 points since February.

Chileans May See Tight Election After All
This year’s presidential election in Chile may not be as safe for the opposition candidate as thought until now, according to a poll by CEP. 35 per cent of respondents would vote for Sebastián Piñera of the opposition centre-right Alliance for Chile (AC) in the December ballot, up one point since June.

Political Career Not Too Attractive for Children
The idea of becoming the head of government of their country was not particularly enticing for people in three countries, according to a poll by Angus Reid Strategies. Only nine per cent of respondents in Canada say they fantasized about becoming prime minister when they were children. Only eight per cent of respondents in the United States acknowledge day-dreaming about becoming president, and only one-in-twenty respondents in Britain say they fantasized about serving as prime minister.

A new WorldPublicOpinion.org poll of 17 nations finds that publics in 15 countries favor the general practice of having international observers monitor elections. In eleven of the nations, most people think that their own country would benefit from international observers monitoring their elections.
